What is a Sound Bath/ Sound Healing Journey?

A sound bath is very much in its namesake. You are bathed with tonal sounds for a period of time, generally 30-60 minutes. The most commonly used instruments in a sound bath are crystal singing bowls, gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, tuning forks, chimes, percussive instruments, and voice. The combination of instruments and sounds are used to energize or to decompress the nervous system. You can also equate it to a sound massage.

The vibrations of the instruments travel through the body to open up and relax the fight, flight, freeze we often respond to in our day to day. You will often be led into a sound bath with a guided visualization meditation or gentle breathwork. The sounds of a gong, chimes, or the ringing of the crystal singing bowls gently start to take over the practitioner's guided meditation till the resonance of the sound journey becomes more enveloping with sound reverberating through your muscle, tissues, and bones, recalibrating on a cellular level.

Many often journey into a deep sleep state, some journey as if in a lucid dream state, and some even experience synthesia, which activates a part of your brain that can see sound as colors.

After the sound bath, you will be safely guided back down to the present moment and your present self. A practitioner will often hold integration circles to process one's journey from the sound bath. Everyone has a fingerprint experience and a unique perspective of each improvisationally channeled session.

A Brief History

Present day Sound Baths are highly inspired by the ancient practices of the Tibetan, Nepali, and East Indian religions that have been using metal singing bowls for over 2000 years. The technology of the crystal singing bowls were created here in the U.S in the 1980’s and have been gaining in curiosity and popularity as tools in creating and assisting in one’s healing journey.

It greatly helps with one's balance of the left and right hemispheres of the brain, resulting in a more present and calm state of being.

There are many studies being done within the field of neuroscience as to how sound and sound healing specifically affects can aid in the healing process. It is also bringing us back to connecting with ancestors of all cultures that have often used vocal sounds and self created instruments to connect with Spirit(s) and Source through ceremony and ritual.
